Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words)
I think one major thing that I’ve gained since starting this course is my creative capacity widening and my creative thinking being broader and freer. I think before I started I was very much boxed in by the limited amount of art I had been introduced to and what I was able to create but since starting at Camberwell I have realised that I can create anything I want, that I can be free and create things just because they feel right not because someone wants me to. I think I’ve also learnt that there is no right or wrong with what I can create. Inspirations for this project will include David Salle, Sigmar Polke, Kirsten Glass, Linder Sterling exploring further using layers, bold colours and large scale.
Section 2: Project concept (approx. 250 words)
For this final project I want to explore sensuality and the female form through the lense of an 18 year old girl. I want to look at incorporating still life and fruit to create this sense of sensuality without having a literal form in the painting. Similar to David Salle’s work I want to incorporate bold uses of text and layering. Moreover, I’d like to incorporate collage much more into this project looking at how women are portrayed through the medias eyes and how I can alter/adjust that portrayal using different objects, shapes and colours. My research will take the form of looking and reading various books and articles about the female form but also examining how it’s portrayed by male artists compared to female artists. Moreover, looking more closely at collage artists/ photomontage artists specifically Linder Sterling. I will also be visiting galleries often to conduct my research like visiting the Dora Marr exhibit at the Tate Modern to take a closer look at photomontage also taking a trip to Paris to have a more in depth look at some of the world’s most famous still life’s. My materials/processes will focus around collages/ mixed media and painting. However, I would like to explore print as that’s something I haven’t yet looked into and I think it could really add depth to my pieces. I think in terms of methods I will create paper collages and photoshop collages then go from there to start painting as I think using photoshop is an incredibly useful tool as you can isolate each layer.
Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 100 words)
I am planning on recording and evaluating my work as I go by using workflow. With pictures and reflective writing to explain my processes and any changes I make throughout this project. On top of using workflow I will use tutor time and crits to gain feedback and evaluate my work and progress/ direction. Not only will i gain valuable feedback but it will also help me develop my project by telling me about new artists/designers who could influence my project further. I will also use a sketchbook to record my journey and process through this project using it to mindmap, collage, plan, research and feedback.
